Before he was born, the doctors advised Andrea’s parents to abort him. Based on tests that had been done, it was clear he would have significant disabilities. His mother and father declined.
From birth Andrea had problems with his sight. He was finally diagnosed as having been born with a disease of the eyes called congenital glaucoma. At the age of 12, he was hit in the eye by a soccer ball playing goalkeeper during a game. He suffered a brain hemorrhage and lost his sight entirely.
He was raised on the family farm in Tuscany. From the time he was a little boy he showed a great love for music. In fact, his mother has said that music was the only thing that would comfort him. At the age of six, he started piano lessons and went on to study other instruments as well.
He also loved to sing and at the age of 14 won his first singing competition in a village near where he raised.
I’ve always known that I was born to sing, ever since I was a child.
Here he is now, singing the Lord’s Prayer.
